First ever review I written.

Review - Cop Out
Directed by Kevin Smith
Starring Bruce WIllis, Tracy Morgan Reviewed by Adam Yates

Synopsis- NYPD partners Jimmy Monroe and Paul Hodges are suspended following a disasterous drug sting. For Jimmy, things get worse as a rare baseball card he was about to sell to pay for his daughters wedding is stolen and ends up in the hands of a local drug cartel. The partners then attempt to retrieve the stolen card as well as bring down the deadly druglord.

Review - The buddy cop genre is one of the tried and tested formulas around. It can produce classics like 'Lethal Weapon' and successful spoofs such as 'Hot Fuzz' but when film historians look back at COP OUT they will compare it only to such attempts as Burt Reynolds turd-fest 'Cop and a Half'.
Jimmy (willis) the veteran you would expect a grumpy persona perhaps in his last week before retirement with a crazy rookie who lives life on the edge keeping him in the right side of alive. Not so. He's a bum, but overall a happy one, smiling at his partner's one liners and in one scene, happy to cover up his partner's wife's supposed infidelity. On the other hand, Willis looks far from happy almost as if being forced to act whilst someone holds a gun to his trademark McClane vest. Yes the younger cop Hodges (Morgan) is quite the crazy but he's also uber-jealous of the next door neighbour's advances on his wife and with Morgan playing it exactly like his 30 Rock role, there's nothing to add to his current repetoire. A Stereotypical Mexican druglord attempts to add some plot to the proceedings but to no avail and two rival nypd partners are given such weak dialogue it should be used on an episode of dalziel and pascoe. There are redeeming elements to be found but they are few and far between. The opening scene where Morgan pays homage to some of cinemas greatest quotes to interrogate a suspect cracks a smile and seann William Scott escapes a supporting role with his dignity intact but the praise stops there. I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith's work and count Clerks as one of my all time faves however I could never forgive myself if my heart overruled my head and I told you that this flick rocks. He is obviously attempting to create a buddy comedy but changes too much of the formula. I'll end the review with this. Cop out is the first Kevin smith movie not written by the man himself. It shows.
