5 Things about....Men in Black 3

1.The Return

The question is do we really want to see our galaxy defenders again? Well Sony seems to think we do so here we are. After the verylacklustre effort of MiB2, we are now deemed worthy enough for a third instalment and not only that, we are having our eyes neuralized to 3-D effect. It will be with us in May 2012 and will see J (Smith) and K (Jones) goingback in time to prevent the death of K by an arch villain who has also travelled back in time. Got it?
2.The Delay

Filming began in November last year but was halted at Christmas. The official line was that the producers wanted to take advantage of some juicy tax incentives that New York offer. The more reported version is that the script has more holes than Sonny Corleone’s machined gun body. The fact that MiB3 is mainly focusing on a story involving time travel will not help this issue. Script troubles are usually the first sign of a bad filmhowever masterpieces (Toy Story) can sometimes be the result of a major script u-turn.

3.The King of Summer

Big Willy Smith has come far since suiting up and fighting alien scum. Two Oscar nominations for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, commercial success with I am Legend, I, Robot and very little career mis-steps apart from continuing to give Martin Lawrence an excuse to get out of his crib. In fact Will Smith is one of the most bankable stars around having set a record for most consecutive $100 million grosses (8) at the US Box Office. You also may not have noticed but this will be the first film starring Will in almost 4 years due to the time he has spent nurturing the careers of his children (Willow and Jaden).

4.The Cast

The one saving grace in this film may be it’s returning and also additional cast. There’s no doubt that Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith have great chemistry and it would have been a disaster if one of them were absent. Rip Torn has torn himself away from his part time job of robbing banks (allegedly) to reprise his role as Chief Zed. Amongst the new faces are Josh Brolin, Nicole Scherzinger (?!) and Emma Thompson. The best piece of casting has come in the form of main villain Jemaine Clement who is best known for one half of Flight of the Conchords.

5.The Likely Outcome

I would love to say this will be as slick and funny as the original but I can’t say I’m looking forward to this one. The second movie just let me down so much after the magic of the first. That being said, never underestimate Will Smith and his unmatched summer strength. My guess is that most of the fans that will flock to see MiB 3-D will end up using pocket-seized devices to wipe their memories of the incident. If only such things existed.
